Every person who is in the journey of spirituality and truth has to solve this great problem as without knowing who you are, you can't move even an inch in the path of enlightenment and truth....
Let me tell you that this is the greatest problem and once you are able to solve it , all problems in your path are automatically solved....
All problems arises only due to the ignorance of who you are? We don't know who we are so we kept on solving small problems which is not even a problem but seems to be a problem because of this ignorance.
There are many books in the market solving this great problem but I will try to answer you based on the method given by Shree Ramana Maharshi.
Ramana Maharshi was a child when he first asked this question to himself.... He kept on asking this question till he got the solution.
He actually saw a person dying in front of him. He first asked a question that this person was alive just a minute before and now he is no more ! Who left this body?
He went into a room and closed the gate from inside and lie on the earth the same way as the dead person was on his deathbed just to see who leaves the body....
He remained in that position for long time until he realised that he is just an awareness. He is aware of what is happening to the body and the surroundings. He is aware of the breathing, the movement of the body , heart , sound of surroundings.....
That day he realised he can't die. That which dies is not "he" but the "body" and "mind". He is an awareness, Consciousness.
There is one Consciousness, awareness in all . It is not separate in me and you. Our body and mind are seperate but how can you separate something which is the subject of all experiences.
There is not consciousness of a person "A" and Consciousness of person "B". This division is wrong. There is one Consciousness filtering through our mind and body. This apparent Consciousness is what you mistakenly identity as an "i" or a "self" .
The ignorance of this truth is the cause of all sufferings. This realisation is the freedom from all sufferings and liberation from all dukhas.
This realisation is the purpose of your birth.
